Nofotane translates to ‘stay or live with husband’, referring to women who marry outside their home village. Often seen as the lowest class in Samoan society, Nofotane women are vulnerable to exploitation and lack control over their lives. SVSG’s case management team has found that most female victims are Nofotane women. To empower them as business owners, SVSG applied to the UN Women Fund for Gender Equality (FGE) for the Nofotane Project (2016-2018), which provided livelihood training to over 5,000 unemployed Nofotane women. More than 600 (12%) started small businesses from the skills they learned. To address the issue of unsustainable income, SVSG applied to EC’s Civil Society Support Programme II for the Sustainable Income Generation of Self Employment of Nofotane Women Project (2000-2022), attracting over 6,000 members and creating over 600 active earners. The Nofotane Shop opened in June 2021 to sell products made by Nofotane women. To further support Nofotane women amid rising gender-based violence in Samoa, SVSG is applying for funding for the Nofotane Samoa Social Enterprise (NSSE) Project (2024-2026) to provide more employment, education and training opportunities. Nofotane Trainers are now implementing the Economic Empowerment component of the UNTF project.
